Remembering Sharon: A devoted teacher and beloved member of our Broadhurst family

At Co-op Academy Broadhurst, we are heartbroken to share the passing of our much-loved Deputy Headteacher, Sharon Smith.

Sharon was more than a teacher, she was the heart of our school, a source of inspiration, kindness and unwavering dedication. Her generosity and selflessness touched the lives of so many and we will forever cherish the time we had with her.

Sharon dedicated almost thirty years of her life to Broadhurst, nurturing a sense of community that went beyond the classroom walls. She first joined the school as a teacher in 1995, becoming Acting Deputy Head in 1999 before stepping permanently into the role in 2001. Throughout her time with us, she also took on the responsibilities of Acting Headteacher, leading with resilience, wisdom and a deep commitment to the children and families she served.

Her impact was far reaching. Sharon was a mentor, a friend and a guiding light to both students and staff. She always put others first, offering a kind word, a helping hand or a listening ear to anyone in need.

In October 2023, Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer. With strength and positivity, she underwent treatment, ringing the bell in August 2024 to mark her remission. Tragically, the cancer returned in October 2024 and after a short illness, Sharon passed away on January 15th, 2025.

The outpouring tributes from pupils, parents, and colleagues reflects just how deeply she was admired:

“She made a real difference to our lives and the support we were given was endless,” shared one parent.

“You could always tell a good joke and never failed to make us laugh,” wrote a former pupil.

“She will be in our hearts no matter how old we grow,” said another.

Headteacher, Jan Gough, said: “Sharon’s unwavering dedication to the children, families and staff of Broadhurst made a lasting impact. To her, Broadhurst was more than just a workplace – it was her second family.

“She was a much-loved colleague, teacher and friend, as well as a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and sister. She adored her two children and was immensely proud of them. The loss to our school and community is felt deeply, and she will be missed more than words can say.”

Dr Chris Tomlinson, CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, said: "Sharon was an exceptional teacher and leader whose kindness and dedication touched so many lives. Her passion for education and unwavering commitment to her school community will never be forgotten. She embodied the very best of our Co-op values, and her legacy will continue to inspire us all."

We will be holding a special remembrance assembly at 3:30pm on Monday, 10th March 2025. We warmly invite pupils – past and present – and members of the community who knew Sharon to join us in celebrating her life, sharing memories, and remembering the incredible person she was.

For those who wish to share a memory, please contact the school office at admin.broadhurst@coopacademies.co.uk.
