Community Group Update  – From Parent and Community Group Link Governor, Louise Waters

Who are We?

Formed last year, the Community Group provides support and strategic oversight of Academy Community Engagement. We consist of school Governors, Co-op Member Pioneers, School Staff and community group volunteers.

What do we do?

We have a shared purpose and meet once a month to plan, coordinate and promote community/family activities both in and out of school. We align to Co-op Academy Trust values and principles and promote social responsibility and improving where we live.

We also aim to draw support from the Co-op Business, Local Council, other businesses, Police and voluntary organisations.

What have we done?

  • Conducted a parent survey (with a prize hamper!) to understand parent/carer priorities.
  • Made link with Co-Op Moston Funeral Care to provide additional resources to the school pastoral team concerning things like bereavement in children and road safety.
  • Have a dedicated mental health, equalities and careers Governor as part of our team to monitor wellbeing and raise the aspiration of pupils.
  • Coordinated some additional nature and biodiversity activities within school from Lancashire Wildlife Trust, who manage the nearby Nature Reserve.
  • Supported a restoration of the school Outdoor Classroom to improve opportunities for learning
  • Support a local “cycle and stride” initiative. A 500m new path ( with solar lighting!) has been built behind the school and extends half way up the Fairway Estate. We hope to promote Active Travel to school. Reducing parking congestion and pollution whilst improving the safety of pupils. Funded by Groundwork Greater Manchester and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
  • Collaborated with the new path contractors, Groundwork to bring in additional nature and ecological activities to the Thursday Eco-Club.
  • Re-vamped the two school notice boards (EYFS and Hall) which are updated with newsletters and key information
  • Used the School Dojo messaging facility to promote local activities, events and signposting relevant to pupils and families.
  • Support in-school activities such as Fairtrade Fortnight, Rights Respecting Schools Gold award, Green Flag with Merit award, Walk and Wheels event, International Women’s Day celebration at FC United, May Mental Health Week, Uniform exchange and access to food.
  • Scheduled two litter-picking events but unfortunately these were cancelled due to COVID.
  • Prioritised loneliness, particularly affecting care home residents post-COVID for the next round of activities. This has started with Reception Class “Pen Pals” led by Miss Higgins and

What’s next – Before Easter 2023?

  • Expand on Care Home activities with pupils.
  • Look into funding for new bicycle storage at school and plan an event with Moston Bike Library.
  • Host an Active Travel Event In March 2023. With resources from Groundwork, Manchester City Council and Transport for Greater Manchester.
  • Make contact with the three new Community Co-Op Local Causes (TBC November 2022) and plan engagement activities.
  • Seek new funding for Mrs Alderson’s nature and food growing events at school
  • Support Schools ambition to reduce it’s carbon footprint, be more environmentally friendly, be more sustainable and reduce waste.

🎃 Happy Half -Term and Halloween! 🎃

Unfortunately these videos are too readily available and accessible, if you or your children come into contact with one of these videos please report it using the reporting function on the website.
